We are a group of enthusiastic people who share an avid interest in photography. Film workers have all but converted to the digital age and our experience ranges from novice through to experienced workers and professionals.
Photography is one activity, especially now in the digital age, that both male and female participate equally and Southern Suburbs Photographic Society enjoys a really good balance of both. The club works in colour and black and white and produces photographic media both in prints and digital images for projection.
The club views its education program as being very important in helping members develop their photographic skills.
Meetings are held on the first, second and third Tuesdays in each month beginning at 8pm (best to arrive by 7.30pm) except for January and November. The syllabus provides further details of club activities which is to be found on this site.
Southern Suburbs Photographic Society welcomes visitors to come along for a few meetings to see how the club operates. Following the meetings, everybody is most welcome to join in some fellowship over a light supper.
Club Meetings
The club meets three times monthly on the first, second and third Tuesdays [see Program]. These meetings commence at 8.00pm and it's best to arrive by 7.30pm.
Presentations and Demonstrations
These are usually held on the first Tuesday of each month by a guest or member on photography or related subjects.
Workshops
On the second Tuesday in each month, the Skills Group is offered to members only. This is a workshop with various presenters who pass on their knowledge of all aspects of photography. Please note: this meeting is for members only.
Mentor Program
The club also runs a mentor program for members where experienced members give advice and assistance to members on how they can develop their photographic skills. This program runs in support of our Workshops.
Competitions
Monthly competitions are held separately for colour prints, monochrome prints and digitally projected images. The competitions may be for Open or Set subjects [see the current Program]. There are two divisions, "A" grade and "B" grade. The "B" grade is for our members of lesser experience. Details of the entry requirements for prints and digital images can be found in the Competition Rules. An independent judge is chosen and he/she will have the entries for about 10 days to determine the winners. At the third Tuesday meeting the judge comes along to deliver his/her findings and winners are announced. Annual trophies are given for the best images and also for the year's winning aggregates.
The third Tuesday meeting gives all members the opportunity to view and learn from other member's work.
The club is a keen entrant in Inter-club Competitions with Essendon, Doncaster and Berwick clubs once a year and at the annual VAPS convention, where all Victorian clubs compete. In addition we have an annual interclub competition with Cheltenham Camera Club in England.
Outings
Photographic outings and dinners are held during the year and are a good way for members to get to know each other better and to improve their photography.
