Welcome to the website of Southern Suburbs Photographic Society. We are a group of enthusiastic people who share an avid interest in photography and our experience ranges from novice through to experienced workers and professionals.
Photography is one activity, especially now in the digital age, that both male and female participate equally and Southern Suburbs Photographic Society enjoys a really good balance of both. The club works in colour and black and white and produces photographic media both in prints and digital images for projection.
Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays in each month except for January, November and December commencing at 8pm. Click on the Activities tab for more details of club activities.
Visitors are welcome to come along for a few meetings to see how the club operates and to join in some fellowship over a light supper after the meeting.
Competitions
Monthly competitions are held separately for colour prints, monochrome prints and digitally projected images. Print entries are due at each first Tuesday meeting (digital images one week earlier). The competitions may be for Open or Set subjects [see the current Program]. There are two divisions, "A" grade and "B" grade. The "B" grade is for our members of lesser experience. Details of the entry requirements for Prints and digital images can be found in the Competition Rules. An independent judge is chosen and he/she will have the entries for about 10 days to determine the winners. At the third Tuesday meeting the judge comes along to deliver his/her findings and winners are announced. Annual trophies are given for the best images and also for the year's winning aggregates.
The club is a keen entrant in Inter-club Competitions with Essendon, Doncaster and Berwick clubs once a year and at the annual VAPS convention, when all Victorian clubs compete.”
Presentations and Demonstrations
These are usually held on the first Tuesday of each month by a guest or member on photography or related subjects.
Workshops
On the second Tuesday in each month, the Skills Group is offered to members only. This is a workshop with various presenters who pass on their knowledge of all aspects of digital photography. Please note: these meetings are for members only.
Photography Courses
The club also runs 3 training courses. The first of these courses is intended for the “novice” person with very little knowledge about creating good pictures or their camera. This course is then followed by an “intermediate” course where we explore the more technical aspects of the hobby. In addition the club also runs an “advanced” course with emphasis on landscape photography.
These courses are open to club members as well as the surrounding community.
The courses are not necessarily run each year. The dates of courses being run this year are listed in the current syllabus.
Outings
Photographic outings, picnics, and dinners are held during the year and are a good way for members to get to know each other better and to improve their photography.
