The Canon EOS 5D series is arguably one of the must recognizable camera lines of the digital age and the Mark IV is designed to appeal to the same wide range of enthusiasts and professionals. Nearly identical-looking to its predecessor, it receives substantial upgrades under the hood, including: a higher-resolution sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus, 4K video capture, an upgraded AF... more

Lens manufacturer Tamron has filed a patent for what looks like an interesting portrait lens to add to its growing collection of fixed focal length lenses. The company appears to be developing a 115mm F1.4 moderate telephoto lens that will come with Tamrons Vibration Compensation system built in. The focal length is very unusual, as is the 45mm that the company chose for its F1.8 standard lens, but that will only make it stand out from the crowd of 90mm, 100mm, 105mm and 135mm lenses. I’m going to preface this by saying that this isn’t a lens review article, there are many photographers better suited for this topic, so if you’re after refraction index comparisons and chromatic aberration charts this article probably isn’t for you.

This article is, however, my personal thoughts on three Nikon zoom lenses and their resulting images but also a broader look at how we as photographers covet lenses and other photographic... more

A research team at Google has developed a way to use neural networks to compress image files in a more efficient way than current methods, such as the JPEG standard. The team built an artificial intelligence system using Google's open source TensorFlow machine learning system, and then used 6 million random reference photos from the internet that... more

A compilation of 3 years of “awkward” GoPro clips with narration. That’s all this video is, but it somehow still strikes a chord. It’s a tribute to all of those candid moments between shots, the time spent setting up gear, getting ready, feeling inadequate or silly or determined… recorded.

The short video was created by filmmaker... more

Photography is a presentation medium. At its most basic, a photograph is simply a means to communicate an idea to an audience. Sometimes the idea is a memory or a moment, other times its an expression of a feeling or intention.

You can argue that the way a message is presented affects the audiences interpretation, but that has to do with the photographers overall storytelling intentions anyways.

I like to think of photography as a visual language. You... more

Unless you have the dough to get a lab scanner, it is a painful process to scan your own film. Luckily one day all the photo labs dumped their Pakon F-135 to the market, and I remember you could get one for ~$250 a pop.

It was the best thing happened to those who want to scan their 35mm film at 5 min each roll, and the quality was excellent. For anything larger than 35mm, the best you can do is probably something like an EPSON v700/800 or a dedicated Nikon... more
