Some activities of SSPS have been affected by COVID-19, but where possible our activities are continuing in a digital form. If you want any further information, please contact us via the link on the right hand side of this page.
Welcome to the website of Southern Suburbs Photographic Society. We are a group of enthusiastic people who share an avid interest in photography and our experience ranges from novice through to experienced workers and professionals.
Photography is one activity, especially now in the digital age, that both male and female participate equally and Southern Suburbs Photographic Society enjoys a really good balance of both. The club works in colour and black and white and produces photographic media both in prints and digital images for projection.
Meetings are held on the first, second and third Tuesdays in each month except for January, November and December commencing at 8pm. Click on the Activities tab for more details of club activities.
The club sees its education program as being very important and is designed to assist all members to develop their photographic skills.
Visitors are welcome to come along for a few meetings to see how the club operates and to join in some fellowship over a light supper after the meeting.
Presentations and Demonstrations
These are usually held on the first Tuesday of each month by a guest or member on photography or related subjects.
On the second Tuesday in each month, the Skills Group is offered to members only. This is a workshop with various presenters who pass on their knowledge of all aspects of photography. Please note that these meetings are for members only. Details of these sessions and the related materials are only accessible by members via the member only section of this website.
The club also offers a mentor program for members where experienced members give advice and assistance to members on how to develop their photographic skills. This program runs in support of our workshops.
Monthly competitions are held separately for colour prints, monochrome prints and digitally projected images. The competitions may be for Open or Set subjects. There are two divisions, "A" grade and "B" grade. The "B" grade is for our members of lesser experience. Details of the entry requirements for prints and digital images can be found in the Competition Rules (accessible only by members). An independent judge is chosen and he/she will have the entries for about 10 days to determine the winners. At the third Tuesday meeting the judge comes along to deliver his/her findings and winners are announced. Annual trophies are given for the best images and also for the year's winning aggregates.
The club is a keen entrant in Inter-club Competitions with Essendon and Caulfield clubs once a year and at the annual VAPS convention, where all Victorian clubs compete. In addition we have an annual interclub competition with Cheltenham Camera Club in England.
Photographic outings and dinners are held during the year and are a good way for members to get to know each other better and to improve their photography.
