In 1952, nine men joined together to form a society for the study
and pursuit of amateur photography. At the inaugural meeting,
held at 4 Gowrie Street, South Oakleigh, on 11th March 1952 it
was decided to call the club the Southern Suburbs Photographic
Society.
The next meeting was held on the 25th March
1952 at 12 Cairns Grove, Bentleigh with 10 members attending.
Interest continued to grow and on the 10th April 1952 meetings
were shifted to Bond's Catering Rooms, Bentleigh with 14 members.
After meeting at Bond's for five years the
club moved in 1957 to the Angler's Club rooms, North Road, Ormond.
As membership continued to grow the society moved to the Baptist
Church Hall, in Vickery Street, Bentleigh in 1959. After many
successful years and further growth in membership the meeting
place was transferred in 1969 to the Moorabbin Town Hall, Room
1. It was during this period the club reached it's record membership
of 102 [1977].
The Moorabbin Council decided to begin improvements
to the Town Hall and as a result the club was forced to relocate.
A member at the time and to this day, Mr. Paul Manning, was associated
with the Uniting Church nearby. The church graciously offered
the club the use of it's hall to host our meetings. The Club moved
to the Uniting Church Hall, Hemming Street, East Brighton in 1986
where it remains today.
The club has continued to operate successfully
and now has membership of 80 with meeting attendances of 45 to
50.
Southern Suburbs has accordingly provided
over 50 years of pleasure and companionship for people with a
common interest.
The club is a foundation member of the Victorian
Association of Photographic Societies.
